WASHINGTON—The future of President Barack Obama’s signature health care overhaul was thrown into deep doubt Tuesday as a divided U.S. Supreme Court raked the constitutionality of the law in crucial Washington hearings.
Already an explosive election-year issue, the Affordable Care Act, dubbed “ObamaCare” by its detractors, was long expected to come under fire from conservative-leaning justices on the nine-member high court.
But few seemed prepared for the intensity of criticism Tuesday, with a majority of the court — including Justice Anthony Kennedy, who holds what is widely seen as a crucial swing vote — expressing concern the law fundamentally alters the relationship between Americans and their government.
