The coming political battle over Bitcoin

Given that Bitcoin first broke into mainstream attention when Gawker explained how to use it to buy drugs, perhaps the surprise is that it took federal regulators this long to take action against it.

In the wake of the Gawker story two years ago, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) described Bitcoin as an “online form of money laundering” and called for the authorities to shutter the Bitcoin-based drug market Silk Road. Yet until recently, the feds have taken a relatively hands-off posture. Agencies have issued guidelines and signaled that they are monitoring the situation, but none have taken active steps to force Bitcoin intermediaries to comply with federal regulations.

That hands-off stance may have started to change this week when the feds took action against Mt. Gox, the world’s leading Bitcoin exchange. Many people use Dwolla, a PayPal-like payment network, to send dollars to their Mt. Gox accounts. They then use those dollars to buy Bitcoins. On Tuesday, Dwolla announced that it had frozen Mt. Gox’s account at the request of federal investigators. It’s the first federal action against the currency.

Bernard Haykel, Professor of Near East Studies at Princeton University, rejects the idea that Qatar is trying to install Islamic governments around the world. “I believe that its policy, which is driven almost exclusively by its emir, the leader of Qatar, is to basically make Qatar valuable in the region by having a key role as mediator, as a sponsor, as a patron for different political forces, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement that it has been cultivating since the 1950s,” he said.

“I think it's just doing it out of what it sees as its pragmatic national self-interest, which is just to have very strong connections with powerful and dominant political forces throughout the region and then, through them, seem even more important to the outside world,” he added.
The question of Qatar’s support of Islamists in Libya and Syria still needs to be answered, though. Stanford University’s Khatib believes Qatar is motivated by the need to protect itself.

“Qatar perceives groups like the Muslim Brotherhood as allies and wants to maintain influencing those allies,” she said. “Aid is a way to maintain a degree of power over those groups. At the same time, when it comes to other Islamist groups that are of a more, let’s say, non-moderate leaning, Qatar’s support of those groups—again, it’s not because it wants to promote them as much as it is interested in controlling them and keeping the danger away from its own borders.”

A bill approved Monday night by the state House would allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses of medication. The Senate has already approved the bill. It goes to Gov. Peter Shumlin, a strong supporter.
Vermont would join Oregon, Washington and Montana. Oregon and Washington passed similar laws by popular vote, and a court order Montana made it legal there. Vermont would be the first to pass such a law through its legislature.

Washington, D.C. - One hundred and seven leading Holocaust and genocide scholars from around the world have sent a letter of protest to President Obama, urging him to cancel a planned visit to the United States by Sudanese leaders involved in the Darfur genocide.

The delegation will represent Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for his role in the Darfur genocide. Heading the delegation will be Bashir adviser Nafie Ali Nafie, a prominent participant in the mass killings.

The letter of protest was organized by The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, based in Washington, D.C. It is the latest in a series of Wyman Institute initiatives seeking U.S. action to stop the Darfur atrocities and bring Bashir to justice.

"We must make it clear to the perpetrators of genocide that the United States will treat them as outlaws and bring them to justice, not treat them as respected statesmen and bring them here for friendly visits," the letter of protest argues.

Bible Publisher Scores Major Victory Against Contraception Mandate

A prominent Bible publisher has won a significant victory in the ongoing battle by employers against President Obama's notorious contraception mandate, which requires businesses and non-church organizations to provide free contraception — including abortion-causing drugs — to their workers. The conservative legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom reported May 6 that at the request of the Department of Justice, a federal appellate court has dismissed an Obama administration appeal of an order that had halted enforcement of the mandate against Tyndale House Bible publishers. The retreat by the administration marks the first complete appellate victory on a preliminary injunction in any of the cases against the mandate.

Tyndale, based in Carol Stream, Illinois, is the world's largest privately held publisher of Bibles and Christian books, and funnels over 95 percent of its profits to religious non-profit groups and causes around the world. The company filed suit to stop enforcement of the mandate last October, specifically objecting to being forced to provide “morning after” contraceptives that can also act as abortifacients, such as drugs marketed under the brand names “ella” and “Plan B.” Shockingly, the Obama administration's Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the mandate, ruled that Tyndale was not a sufficiently religious entity to qualify for the exemption bestowed upon churches and a select few non-profits.

Near the summit at Masada, one can see the place where the Romans breached the defenses of the 1,000 Jewish men, women, and children who’d fled after the destruction of Jerusalem some two years earlier. That’s why the May 10^th engagement is so stunning, and so dismaying.
For 40 years, Calvary Chapels have been a stronghold of biblical thought. The verse-by-verse teaching style from the pulpits is a blessing to the American Church, now awash in false teachings and outrageous personalities.

“The modern methods of monitoring smoking, primarily you rely on self-report,” said Dr. Edward Sazonov, an associate professor at the University of Alabama who is leading the project. “There are few devices which actually allow a more computerized health report,” he told CNSNews.com.

“We are trying to eliminate the need for self-report from people about how much they smoke, when they smoke, how many puffs they take from the cigarette,” he said.

A new FBI proposal would compel internet communications companies to hand over information--or pay a fine.

Existing wiretap law is almost 20 years old and doesn't capture the nuances of modern internet use. The Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act was first authorized in 1994, and it ordered "telecommunications carriers" to comply with court orders to assist in intercepting communication. Since then, communication online has taken off, while the landscape of what we know has telecommunications carriers has drastically changed. In 2006, the FCC expanded the act to include Internet access providers, but there's a tricky caveat: court orders under existing law only instruct internet communications providers to offer technical assistance to law enforcement. That gives the tech companies some leeway if they're uncomfortable handing over information; they can just say they were unable to make the technology work the way the FBI wants.

Under the new proposal, that wiggle room disappears. FBI officials can notify a company (with a wiretap order, say) that they need the tech to be surveillance-ready in 30 days. If not? Nearly one in three commercial honeybee colonies in the United States died or disappeared last winter, an unsustainable decline that threatens the nation’s food supply.
Multiple factors — pesticides, fungicides, parasites, viruses and malnutrition — are believed to cause the losses, which were officially announced today by a consortium of academic researchers, beekeepers and Department of Agriculture scientists.
“We’re getting closer and closer to the point where we don’t have enough bees in this country to meet pollination demands,” said entomologist Dennis vanEngelstorp of the University of Maryland, who led the survey documenting the declines.

Beekeepers lost 31 percent of their colonies in late 2012 and early 2013, roughly double what’s considered acceptable attrition through natural causes. The losses are in keeping with rates documented since 2006, when beekeeper concerns prompted the first nationwide survey of honeybee health. Hopes raised by drop in rates of loss to 22 percent in 2011-2012 were wiped out by the new numbers.

In the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Congress passed a law requiring the federal government to collect the fingerprints of every foreigner leaving the country so the U.S. could better track who has left and, more importantly, who has remained past the expiration of their visas.

The Department of Homeland Security has been unable to establish that program in the 12 years since. And now the program has become a major point of contention in the Senate attempt to overhaul the nation's immigration laws given that millions of people who are in the country illegally first arrived here legally, but overstayed their temporary visas.

Democrats in the "Gang of Eight" that is proposing the immigration overhaul say Homeland Security today is doing a better job tracking foreigners who leave the country using biographical data, such as a traveler's name and date of birth.
Republicans disagree, and the dispute could upset the attempt to pass a bill.

U.N. passes sweeping international arms regulation viewed by some as Second Amendment override - Washington Times

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday signed off on a sweeping, first-of-its-kind treaty to regulate the international arms trade, brushing aside worries from U.S. gun rights advocates that the pact could lead to a national firearms registry and disrupt the American gun market.

The long-debated U.N. Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) requires countries to regulate and control the export of weaponry such as battle tanks, combat vehicles and aircraft and attack helicopters, as well as parts and ammunition for such weapons. It also provides that signatories will not violate arms embargoes, international treaties regarding illicit trafficking, or sell weaponry to countries for genocide, crimes against humanity or other war crimes.

New York Times notices that Obama totally manipulates the press

There are a lot of reasons I don’t much sympathize with the Times’s complaint, but I’ll boil them down to two. First, “bloopers and bobbles” are not news. Of course the White House puts out pictures of Obama when he’s looking good. But it doesn’t tell us anything important to see a photo of him tripping over his shoelaces or dripping mustard on his suit. That is the sort of trivia that the media gets excited about but carries no real news value of any kind. You can’t blame the White House for wanting to avoid “bloopers and bobbles,” but you can absolutely blame the allegedly serious media for wanting to report them.
But here is the more serious issue: Not getting access to the president for a solo news conference or a sit-down interview does not prevent you from reporting in a substantive way on his policies and how they are affecting the nation. Where was the Times to tell us about the real effects of ObamaCare? What did the Times have to say about all the waste and ineffectiveness of the $862 billion “stimulus”? Why hasn’t the Times made an issue of Democrats’ refusal to pass a budget for four years? Where is all the Times’s detailed reporting on the expansion of the regulatory state?

You don’t need an interview with the president to report on any of this, and you certainly don’t need embarrassing pictures of him to help tell the story. Go get the facts. Sure it would be nice to have a quote from the president, but it’s hardly necessary for you to do your job.

Look, I think the entire political world is way too image-conscious, and in that respect I don’t like the way the White House obsesses over pictures and the parsing of words. Other White Houses have done the same but this one does seem to take it to a high art form.

But the proper response of the press is not to whine about image manipulation. It’s to ignore it and report on substantive facts. The New York Times refuses to do that because, however much it may bug them that they can’t get their one-on-one sit-down, their editorial mission is to serve as apologists for the Obama agenda. I guess it just bothers them that Obama accepts their help with such ingratitude. It can’t be easy to be media lapdogs.

With all eyes trained expectantly on the latest Obama executive order; with the definition of one man, one woman marriage being rewritten by the Supreme Court, progressives in office have been working out the details to come up with a way to capture your children.
Millions of parents with school-age children will never know their children have been captured and led away.  The name of the program set up for the kidnap of all time is so innocent sounding: Common Core.  But in typical Marxist fashion, the name can be morphed into a myriad of others when it becomes expedient to keep parents in the dark.

Officially at war, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter dispute over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh - a mountainous enclave within Azerbaijan with a majority Armenian population - which Armenian-backed forces seized along with seven surrounding Azeri districts in 1991.

Turkey, which has never opened an embassy in Armenia, closed its land border in 1993 in a show of solidarity with Azerbaijan, a Muslim and Turkic-speaking ally which also supplies Ankara with billions of cubic metres of Caspian natural gas each year.

Azerbaijan has voiced fierce opposition to the flights and last week Ali Hasanov, a senior official at the president's office in Baku, said they amounted to support for "the occupant country" and only prolonged the "occupation".

But don't be fooled. The UCR senate did not pass the divestment bill because UCR students agree with the SJP. The senate passed the divestment bill, quite simply, because it was swindled. Because the SJP orchestrated it so that opponents of the bill did not get their say.

President Obama approved a temporary spending bill this week that averted a government shutdown but also riled a slew of groups that say one provision protects Monsanto and other makers of genetically modified seeds and crops from federal courts.

The so-called Monsanto Protection Act essentially requires the Agriculture Department to approve the growing, harvesting and selling of such crops, even if the courts rule environmental studies are incomplete -- undermining  the judicial review system and posing potential health risks, critics say.
The biotech rider was included in spending bill HR 933 and signed Tuesday by Obama, despite White House protests and at least two petitions, including one by the group Food Democracy Now that got more than 250,000 signatures.
