Following the ouster last month of a lesbian Cub Scout leader in Ohio, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) organization is facing intense pressure to abandon its long-time policy of barring homosexuals from serving as Scout leaders.
Jennifer Tyrrell, a Cub Scout den leader from Bridgeport, Ohio, was removed from that position in early April after Boy Scout officials discovered that she was a lesbian. The Scout Oath emphasizes the importance of Boy Scouts being “morally straight,” and homosexual conduct violates that value, BSA officials explained.

New Kansas Law Bans Use of Foreign Law (particularly Shariah)
Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas has signed a law, which takes effect on July 1, 2012, intended to keep Kansas courts from relying upon Islamic sharia law. The language of the new law does not specifically mention sharia; rather, it states that courts and administrative tribunals cannot use any foreign law as a legal basis for its rulings if that foreign law would not grant to all parties involved the same rights that would have existed under federal or state constitutions.
Stephen Gele of the American Public Policy Alliance in Michigan said: “This bill should provide protection for Kansas citizens from the application of foreign laws. The bill does not read, in any way, to be discriminatory against any religion.” The organization’s website also states: "America has unique values of liberty which do not exist in foreign legal systems, particularly Shariah Law."

A Catholic university in Ohio said Tuesday it is being forced to end a student health insurance program over the Obama administration's contraception mandate and costs associated with other provisions of the health care overhaul.
Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, said it has so far excluded contraceptive services and products from its health insurance policy for students and will not participate in a plan that “requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.”

ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi -- Following the April 1 introduction of new safety standards that limit allowable radioactive cesium in food to less than 100 becquerels per kilogram, fishermen in many disaster-stricken areas are saying life is worse now than it was last year.
"The tsunami last March was horrible, but life now is two, three times more difficult," uttered 59-year-old Kenichi Suda, a fisherman from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, as he stood amid piles of rubble still remaining along the coast of the city over a year after the March 11, 2011, disasters. "If only there were no radiation problem," he said.
If the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant had never taken place, Suda, who is based some 100 kilometers from the damaged plant, would have been busy right now fishing for sand lance, whose peak season is in spring.
However, despite the fact that radiation screenings on the fish conducted this January showed doses below 100 becquerels per kilogram, Suda and other local fishermen belonging to a Miyagi prefectural fishery cooperative reached the decision to refrain from fishing this spring due to fears of radioactive contamination.

A Colorado court has ruled the state’s proclamation for a Day of Prayer is unconstitutional.
The state appeals court made the ruling Thursday on the proclamations by former Govs. Bill Ritter, a Democrat, and Bill Owens, a Republican, saying they violate the Constitution's provisions for religious liberty.
The three-judge panel ruled unanimously that such a state-sponsored proclamation sends a message that those who pray are favored members of Colorado's political community, according to the Denver Post.
"In doing so, they undermine the premise that the government serves believers and nonbelievers equally," Judge Steven Bernard wrote in a 73-page decision.

Pediatricians in Canada are starting to discharge children whose parents refuse to have them vaccinated.
More and more, doctors are taking a stand when their medical advice is being ignored, said Dr. Hirotaka Yamashiro, chair of the pediatrics section for the Ontario Medical Association and president of the Pediatricians Alliance of Ontario.
“There have been some pediatricians who are very concerned about that, and may not take on the patient in the beginning,” Yamashiro said. “If you are going to fundamentally disagree with one of the things I think is good for your child, what else are we going to have a problem with?”
Dr. Fatima Kamalia, a Thornhill-based pediatrician, says she discharges patients whose parents refuse to have them vaccinated.

It is the most powerful federal agency you’ve never heard of -- and lawmakers from both parties on Thursday vowed to keep abreast of its astonishing growth and rein it in, if necessary.
The Office of Financial Research, or OFR, was created by the Dodd-Frank financial services overhaul that President Obama signed into law in July 2010. Technically housed under the Treasury Department, the agency has until now received its funding not from the Congress, but directly from the Federal Reserve.
Starting in July, the OFR Fiscal Year 2013 budget, estimated at $158 million, will be funded entirely through assessments -- also known as taxes -- on bank-holding firms with consolidated assets worth at least $50 billion.
But as became clear at Thursday’s hearing by the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, a close reading of the law the president signed provides no limit on the growth of OFR’s budget, nor on the taxes the agency can impose on big banks to fund it.
