BOCA RATON — U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation, is about as hawkish as they come on Afghanistan, but he sounded war-weary at a recent town hall meeting.
"It has been very frustrating for me to sit back and look at us be involved in the nation-building, occupation-style warfare. It drains your economic resources. Ten years, 11 years is too long for us to be mired down in a place like Iraq or Afghanistan," West said at Lynn University.
West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who will visit Afghanistan this week, remains supportive of the U.S. presence there and recently voted against a Democratic proposal to speed troop withdrawals.
But his comments at the town hall and desire to eventually move to a more mobile, strike-oriented presence in Afghanistan are part of a growing debate within the GOP over military involvements in Afghanistan and Libya.
